Wood Buffalo National Park: overview

In the southern region of North West Territories, Wood Buffalo National Park is located on either side of the Alberta–Northwest Territories border and was established in 1922 to preserve the bison. This objective has been a success and today the park is home to one of the world’s largest free-roaming herds of wood bison.

A park the size of Switzerland

Occupying an area the size of Switzerland – at 44,807 sq km (17,300 sq miles), Wood Buffalo National Park is one of the world’s largest national parks and covers a remarkable landscape of forests, meadows, sinkholes and an unusual salt plain. You can attend a 'Bison Creep' to view these creatures.
