The fountains at Bellagio. More than 17,000 gallons of water spray from no fewer than 11,000 spouts, all of which are choreographed to music and lights.

The sea battle at Treasure Island: a roadside engagement between scantily clad Sirens and a crew of renegade pirates. The sea battle takes place several times each evening.

The Conservatory at Bellagio showcases lilies, orchids, ferns and rare tropical flowers around water features that seem impossible in the desert.

At Ethel M. Chocolates, around a ton and a half of chocolates are enrobed on each employee's shift. Visitors can watch some of the chocolate production on a self-guided tour between 8.30am and 7pm every day (1 Cactus Garden Drive, tel: 888-627-0990).

Lion Habitat at MGM Grand. The home of the descendants of Metro, MGM studio's signature lion. On the casino floor, visitors walking through the glass entrance to the Lion Habitat find the kings of the savannah sleeping over their heads or beneath their feet.

M & M's World. There are interactive exhibits, a Racing Café and a candy store. An elevator takes visitors up the 100-foot high Coca-Cola bottle so they can enjoy the view of the Strip from above (M & M's adjoins the MGM Grand at 3785 Las Vegas Boulevard South 2, tel: 736-7611).

The White Tiger Habitat at the Mirage is the home of Siegfried & Roy's tigers. The Secret Garden (admission fee) displays even more wild animals, or you can dither over your registration at the Mirage's reception desk while you gawp at the sharks and other sea species contained in a 20,000 gallon tank behind.

The fine Marjorie Barrick Museum is a natural history museum with live lizards as well as stuffed exhibits of other desert creatures. Located on the campus of the University of Nevada, this informative museum also displays artefacts of Native American, Guatemalan and Mexican cultures.
