No highway in the world is as laden with romance and adventure as the Silk Road. As recently as the 1930s, travellers on the first stretch from Xi’an to Lanzhou would have to journey by pony, the original ‘slow travel’. Although modes of transport have improved since then, only now do we see the introduction of the first ever full-colour guide to the entire 5,000-mile trading route, from China to the Mediterranean. Chris Bradley, one of the main contributors to the newly published Insight Guides’ The Silk Road, takes you on a journey through the landscapes, history and cultures of the Road, as it traverses some 13 countries, highlighting everything from the domes of Samarkand to the bazaars of Aleppo, the oasis of Turpan to the sands of the Taklamakan, and the walls of Khiva to the ruins of Palmyra.
Chris is a pioneering tour leader, who took groups along the Chinese and Central Asian sections of the Silk Road during the difficult communist era of the 1980s. The last 20 years has seen him concentrate on the countries of the Middle East and Levant. For this Insight Guide title, he went back to write and photograph the entire Western Asia section. As a lecturer, one of his most popular subjects is the art and culture of the countries along the Silk Road. Also a TV documentary maker, Chris has made films on Africa and Arabia for the BBC, Channel 4 and National Geographic.
