USA - Great Lakes
The Place
The Great Lakes encompass nature and some of America's best, if often overlooked cities. The beauty of a week spent outdoors here is amazing anytime of the year. Whether you are looking for ice fishing in northern Minnesota in January or sunbathing on Lake Michigan in July, you will not be disappointed in the beauty of the Great Lakes. It would be a waste, though, to miss the city life on offer. A small, twin city, Minneapolis and St Paul have thriving arts and music scenes in addition to natural Mid-western charm. The area is down to earth with a liberal slant. America's first socialist mayor was elected in Milwaukee in 1910 and the party held this office for the next 30 years. America's passion for sport is on display in Green Bay like nowhere else. Here locals own the football team and following them is a religion. If there were a capital of the region, undoubtedly it would be Chicago. America's third largest city is steeped in the history of gangsters and prohibition and now offers some of the best art on view in the country and lakefront that is always an easy escape. Along with Chicago, the cities of Buffalo, Cleveland and Detroit form the basis for America's heavy manufacturing industries.
