Wales
The Place
Traditionally, Wales is a melodic land of green hills and welcoming valleys, of Welsh cakes, scenic railways, crumbling castles, poets and song. It has sweeping sandy beaches and dramatic coves, sheep for shawls, lamb for the pot and ponies for trekking over hills. It is less populous than England, though its accessibility from southern, central and northern parts of the UK make it a popular holiday haunt.
The great crags and gullies of Snowdonia have long attracted hikers, rock-climbers and mountaineers. Equally beautiful, though less well publicised, is the region's glorious coastline, stretching north from the Dovey peninsula round the Lleyn Peninsula and Anglesey to the River Conwy. Nowhere else in Britain are high mountains and quality seaside found in such close proximity.
