Insight Guides/Independent on Sunday Travel Photography Prize 2006
Many thanks to all you who entered this year's competition. We received more than 200 entries, covering exotic locations from as far afield as Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. The standard of photography this year was impressive overall (though we did wonder whether whoever sent in the shots of feet, and another of a hand, had mixed us up with another competition. Maybe next year we should make the theme Body Parts and see what that produces).
But, without further ado, our congratulations to the three splendid winners:

1st: Douglas McGilviray 2nd: Alex Havret 3rd: John Peck
Santa Caterina, Lago di Maggiore, Italy Bac-ha market, Vietnam Correos entrance, Valencia, Spain
Douglas McGilviray's prize is a commission, worth £3,000, to photograph a foreign destination for one of Insight Guide's prestigious new guidebooks. Alex Havret won the second prize - £1,000 vouchers, while John Peck won third prize - £500 vouchers.
Our thanks also go to the judges: Brian Bell, Insight Guides' Editorial Director; Peter Noble, a Trustee and Council member of the Royal Photographic Society; and Sophie Battersby, Associate Picture Editor of The Independent on Sunday.
News of next year's Travel Photography Competition will be announced here in spring 2007.
