Tomb Sweeping Day

Traditionally calculated as the 105th day after the Winter Solstice and called the Qingming (Clear and Bright) Festival, Tomb-Sweeping Day in Taiwan is now celebrated annually on April 5, which coincides with the date of President Chiang Kai-shek’s death, in 1975. Though April 5 remains the date of the traditional Chinese festival it is no longer a national holiday in Taiwan.

During this festival, entire families travel to their ancestral burial grounds to clear accumulated dirt, debris, and plant growth from the tombs, place fresh flowers before the entrances, and perhaps plant some new trees, flowers, and bushes in the area.
