About this photo

Water floods the terraced rice fields on the slopes of Batukaru Mountain in Bali, Indonesia. Silhouettes of mountains and palms surround the estate named Jatiluwih 'really special'. These paddy fields are maintained by the Subak cooperative; an ecologically sustainable irrigation system that was devised in the 9th Century by priests of the water temples. It remains under their authority.

Rice can grow in almost any conditions but its growth is most prolific in countries with high rainfall and warmer temperatures. Flooding the fields while seeds are sewn, or shortly after, is a traditional method of weed and pest control.

Tour the rice fields in Bali on day 10 of Insight Guides' The Best of Bali trip.
