About this photo

East Java, Indonesia, is home to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The park spans a massive 800 square kilometres and is home to the highest mountain in Java, Mount Semeru, which rises 3,676 metres above sea level.

Mount Semeru is pictured here in the background of the caldera of the ancient volcano, Tengger, out of which five volcanic cones were formed; Mount Batok, Mount Bromo, Mount Kursi, Mount Watangan and Mount Widodaren. The caldera is home to the only conservation area in Java of sand sea (desert sands).

Mount Batok is the only dormant volcano, with lush foliage of casuarina trees growing on its rises. Mount Bromo, the most popular volcano, is active, puffing ash clouds into the sky; it is named after the Hindu creator, Brahma. Visit the volcanos on sunrise mountain trek during Insight Guides' Java Discovery trip.
