About this photo

The Art Deco style Central Market was built in Phnom Penh in 1937 during the French Colonial period. You can buy almost anything at this large market, from souvenir T-shirts and post cards to jewellery and electronics. The building is shaped with a central dome with four linear structures protruding from it which form narrow corridors for vendors to sell their goods.

Prior to 1937 the area where Central Market now stands was a large lake. It caught the run off rain water from the city during the rainy season and the area continues to flood to this day. Visit Central Market on Insight Guides' Cambodia Cultural Discovery trip.
