About this photo

Dancers dress in traditional Japanese style for the parades of the Kagoshima City Dance Festival. The two-day festival originated in 1949 as a celebration of the 60th anniversary of Kagoshima City on Kyushu Island, Japan.

Summer kimono, overcoats and hats are worn by dancers who perform the Taiko and traditional Kagoshima dances on the 2nd and 3rd of November each year. Parades commence at 07.00pm, on both nights, along the Tenmonkan tram line. Trams are decorated with flowers and lanterns to accompany the dancers and free dancing, allowing everyone to join in the festivities. Add a stop in Kagoshima to any of Insight Guides’ Japan itineraries.
