About this photo

The Farah III shipwreck is a cargo ship that has been run aground on a beach on the east coast of Sri Lanka since 2006. At the time, the LTTE assumed control of the ship and subsequently used it as an operational centre by the militant group's naval arm. It was captured by the Sri Lankan army towards the end of the country's civil war in 2009. Today, what is left of the shipwreck is a striking reminder of a bitter fight, one that is now history as even Sri Lanka's less developed parts are opening up to tourism.
