About this photo

The gaucho from José Hernández's narrative poem, Martin Fierro, has become the symbol of the national holiday celebrated on Dia de la Tradicion (Day of Tradition). Held annually on 10th November, the day José Hernández was born, it celebrates the lifestyle, customs, language and codes of honour held by gauchos across Argentina. The week-long celebration of parties, BBQs, dancing, music, open air concerts, horse shows and rodeos ends on the 10th November with a gaucho parade; the main parade and celebrations take place in San Antonio de Areco. Learn about the gaucho customs on day three of Insight Guides’ Wild Patagonia trip.
