About this photo

Around Hong Kong there are more than 235 outlying islands. Many are uninhabited or home to very small communities. The major islands of Lantau, Cheung Chau and Lamma are full of fascinating contrasts and it is worth setting aside a couple of half-days to visit.

Most of Lantau is still remarkably tranquil and much if it remains rural, with more than half of it marked as protected parkland. The Po Lin Monastery is home to the Tian Tan Buddha statue (pictured) and glorious views out over the island. You'll need to climb 268 steps to get to the top though. If you're feeling peckish post-climb, the monastery serves a vegetarian lunch.
