About this photo

With their distinctive red, blue and gold uniforms, Los Granaderos de Tarqui are a cavalry unit in the Ecuadorian Army. Here, they are seen guarding the Government Palace in Quito.

Their uniforms were originally worn by soldiers who fought alongside Antonio Jose de Sucre in the fight for Independence. They are responsible for guarding the government building, honouring the President, hoisting and lowering the flag and honouring officials visiting Ecuador. Visit the capital to see the guards as part of Insight Guides' Ecuador: History and Culture trip.
