About this photo

Balancing and carrying bags on the head is the norm in many different countries around the world, including Madagascar. It is a practice dating back many centuries, and Madagascar is a country with a rich and diverse history. Over many hundreds of years, settlers migrating from an array of places in the Indian Ocean have turned Madagascar into a melting pot of different peoples and cultures, culminating in a complex set of beliefs, customs and rituals.

Madagascar today is remarkably unspoilt, with lush vegetation and rich rainforest ecosystems and splendid landscapes. You can explore the treasures of this unmarred paradise on our Dreaming of Madagascar trip.
