About this photo

A passenger plane takes off from Lukla Airport in the Everest region of Nepal. A short mountain flight over the Himalayas is the quickest and easiest way to see these spectacular mountains at close range, and flights into Lukla give the thrill of a lifetime as the little plane descends below the peaks, into the Dudh Kosi gorge and to the runway that ends at a mountain face.

Elsewhere, most of Nepal domestic airlines run daily hour-long mountain flights, east from Kathmandu to see Mount Everest and the other craggy peaks that define the central and eastern Himalayan range. Flying at altitudes of approximately 7,500 to 8,500 metres (25,000 to 28,000ft) – eye level with the peaks at some 22km (14 miles) distance – passengers get a magnificent close-up perspective. Fly into Lukla on Insight Guides' Exclusive Everest trip.
