About this photo

In Buddhism, those who wish to be fully ordained monks must first become novices. During this period, novice monks will adopt several parts of the monastic code and prepare fastidiously for their full ordination. The monks in this photo are novices, as is indicated by the robes they are wearing – when fully ordained, Buddhist monks wear double thickness robes. They are climbing on the Hsinbyume Pagoda on the western bank of the Irrawaddy River in Mingun. The pagoda itself is modelled on the physical descriptions of the Buddhist mythological mountain, Mount Meru, which explains its white colour.
