About this photo

The city of Niterói, across the bay from Rio de Janeiro, is famed for its modern architecture by Niemeyer. At the top of a hill, overlooking the sea, is his futuristic Museu de Arte Contemporânea (MAC). A quintessential Niemeyer structure, with its modernistic concrete curves painted white, was built in 1996. It has become so iconic that it is now the emblem of Niterói. Inside, there are huge glass windows arranged as a band around the entire building, from which you can gaze down onto the sea and across the bay to the Sugarloaf. There are two levels, with art exhibits on show, but the building, not the art, is the main attraction.
