About this photo

It’s not hard to see why Rano Kau on Easter Island has been described as a “giant witch’s cauldron”. Filled with black water and floating green fields of totora reeds, its steep, 200-metre (656ft) -high wall is gently eroding on the seaward side to include a view of the Pacific. This volcanic crater is, without a doubt, the most visually spectacular natural spot on the Chilean island.

Insight Guides' local experts in Chile can help you put together a personalised trip to the extraordinary Easter Island, taking in all of its famed monuments as well as its natural wonders. Get in touch today!
