About this photo

A young girl sells flowers at Kuthodaw Pagoda in the northern city of Mandalay, Myanmar. Flowers and other gifts such as sweets and incense make popular offerings at temples all over Myanmar.

While Mandalay is home to many popular pagodas and temples, the Kuthodaw is iconic, both for its 729 whitewashed pagodas within the site and for housing the 'world's largest book'. The entire Tipitaka is written in Pali script on marble tablets, which are kept inside the scattering of pagodas here. To highight the scale of this feat, when it was first unvelied, it took 2,400 monks six months to recite the entire text.
