About this photo

Taungthaman Lake in Amarapura, Myanmar, is lit with an orange glow as fishing boats glide along the water creating ripples for the setting sun to catch. Tourists and locals gather daily on the U Bein Bridge, which spans the lake, taking photos of the serene scene or crossing to reach their homes.

The 1.2-kilometre bridge is made from the redundant teak wood columns of the Royal Palace in Amarapura; the palace was built here when it was the Capital of Burma (1783-1821). The bridge was commissioned by U Bein, the mayor at the time, around 1850. Take your own photo of the sun setting on Taungthaman Lake on Day 6 of Insight Guides’ The Best of Myanmar trip.
