About this photo

Songkran Festival is one of the best-known of Thailand's festivals, thanks to the infamous development of its practices from a sprinkling of water at temples to attract metit to a full-on water fight in the streets of Bangkok. However, elsewhere in Thailand, celebrations for the lunar new year, marked by Songkran, are more genteel. In Chiang Mai, a crystal Buddha is paraded through the streets and traditionally dressed celebrants add to the festive air. Chiang Mai is known for its wats, night bazaar and access to elephant and jungle treks: discover all these and more with Insight Guides on our Chiang Mai Sustainable Trails trip.
