About this photo

The Indus River runs cobalt blue at the base of the small hill where the Stakna Monastery proudly sits. Backed by the colossal Himalayan mountain range, the Buddhist monastery can be found on the outskirts of Leh, a town in the Jammu and Kashmir state of northern India. The monastery is home to 30 monks, who are willing to take visitors on private guided tours of their hillside home.

Leh was the former capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh; other sites in the town include the ruins of the Leh Palace, the former residence of the Royal Family.
