About this photo

Although surfing was first described in literature in 1769, it wasn’t until the 1970s that Bali became a popular place for the sport. The Bukit Peninsula was enjoyed by a Californian surfer who moved to Kuta in 1936. It took a while for other surfers to follow.

Kuta beach is now a popular destination, creating plenty of competition on the waves. Branch out from Kuta to Dreamland, Uluwatu, Padang Padang or Nusa Dua for some quieter areas to surf. April to October (dry season) are the best months for surf in Bali with warm weather and waves up to 12ft high created by ocean swells. If you're a novice or complete beginner, November to March offers more manageable waves, up to 6ft high. Add a stay in Kuta to any of Insight Guides' Bali itineraries.
