About this photo

Machu Picchu, high up in the Andes Mountains, is an Incan citadel built during the 15th century and then re-discovered by American explorer Hiram Bingham. One of the first archaeologists to explore Peru, Bingham visited many important sites across the country, discovering the ruins at Machu Picchu in 1911. He mistakenly declared them the missing ruins of Vilcabamba; today they are the most visited site in the whole of South America. Wander the ruins of Machu Picchu for yourself with Insight Guides' Culinary Peru trip.
