About this photo

See the exotic splendour of the Wat Phra Kaew and Grand Palace complex, in Bangkok, Thailand, when lit up after dark on Insight Guides' Bangkok Gourmet trip. These fabulously ornate buildings are an arresting spectacle of form and colour, with pillars which glisten golden as light reflects from the mosaic glass.

Housed in the main building is the Emerald Buddha. A statue, 26 inches tall, carved out of a single jade stone; the name Emerald Buddha refers to the deep green colour of the statue, not the stone. This statue makes Wat Phra Kaew the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand.
