About this photo

Hindus make up a small amount of Indonesia's overall population. However, most of Indonesia's Hindu minority live on Bali: roughly 90% of the island's population of 4.5 million are Hindu. Offerings are an integral part of both Balinese and Hindu culture.

In this photo, women are carrying food basket offerings on their heads, whilst on the way to the village temple. The Hindu attitude toward offers is well summarised in the Bhagavad Gita, (the Hindu holy book), when Lord Krishna teaches Arjuna how to pray, and says: "whosoever offers to me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water; that offering of love, of pure of heart, I accept.”
