About this photo

The Uru people of Lake Titicaca inhabit 42 floating islands that are made almost entirely from reeds. Homes were built on floating islands as a defensive mechanism, the largest of the islands till contains a watch tower. The Uru no longer speak their native language or practice their old beliefs but many traditional customs and crafts stay unchanged. See the floating island homes on Insight Guides' The Andes to the Amazon: Peru Explored trip.
