A hippo in Chobe National Park, Botswana

About this photo
Hippos spend their days semi-submerged in rivers and waterholes and like these to be deep enough for them to sink out of sight if danger threatens. They emerge in the evening to graze, returning to the safety of water during the day. Hippos are social animals and gather in 'schools' of around 12 or more.
