About this photo

Horse and carts tour the 2,000 remaining temples and pagodas in the ancient city of Bagan, Myanmar. Horses walk easily over the sand and soft dirt making the cart a good option for travelling around the plains. Visitors can also explore by bicycle, e-bike or by car.

Over 10,000 temples and pagodas were originally built here but were left to fall into disrepair, along with the wooden houses, after inhabitants left the area. There has been a number of migrations throughout the centuries, due to warfare, bankruptcy, earthquakes and political meddling. While the area around the temples is still uninhabited, nearby town Nyuang-U is flourishing. Rent a horse and cart or hot air balloon to tour the ancient ruins during Insight Guides’ Myanmar Highlights holiday.
