About this photo

The pretty medieval town of Sorano – literally hewn into the tuff stone of the hillside – is located in the Grosseto province of Southern Tuscany. The river Lente flows below. Guarding it from above, the Orsini Fortress is imposing and enchanting. Originally built in the 14th century and later renovated in the 16th century, the castle retains its main gate, a vast square, an impressive tower, a memorial tablet and the atmospheric remains of its once-impregnable walls.

The village itself is equally charming, with lovely cobbled streets, winding alleys and steep staircases leading from the hilltop. But hilltop living has come at a price. Once much larger, parts of the village have been lost to landslides over the centuries, the most significant striking in 1801.
