About this photo

A Buddha statue sits in a temple on Mount Popa in Myanmar, surrounded by flowers and money. They are material offerings from worshippers of the Buddhist faith given, while chanting, in preparation for meditation. The Theravada practice of Buddhism is the main practice in Myanmar, in their framework of karma and rebirth worshippers offer, ultimately, in the hope of a better rebirth.

Mount Popa also hosts the country's principle centre for nat worship. Nat shrines often appear next to, and frequently inside, Buddhist temples, and Burmese worshippers tend to see no contradiction in this.
