About this photo

Kakku Pagoda is home to some 2,000 stupas crammed into a 1km2 space. The site's main, central stupa towers over the others at 40-metres high. Located in Shan State, around a 90-minute journey from tourist hotspot Inlé Lake, this is a must-see on your Myanmar itinerary (add a stop here to Insight Guides’ Secrets of Myanmar holiday to tour the country's highlights).

Legend says King Alaungsithu, a former king of Bagan, created the first stupas here in the 12th century. The Pa-O people took over, proving their religious devotion to the Buddhist faith, giving up their time and money to expand the monument.
