About this photo

A conical-hatted worker tends to colourful bunches of incense at a village in Hue that specialises in making the fragrant sticks from bamboo, dye and scented powder. The bamboo is chopped into thin strips to form the sticks. The powder is made with burned bamboo or coconut wood (charcoal), it is scented and pressed around the stick.

For the Lunar New Year in Vietnam, it is essential to burn incense to recall a family's ancestors. Visit Vietnam on one of Insight Guides' pre-planned itineraries and make a stop in Hue to watch the incense sticks being made.
