About this photo

Manzanillo is a tiny fishing village along Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, popular with visitors for its stretch of sand; coral reefs offshore create a natural harbor. The water can be as calm as a lake for swimming in the early morning and late afternoon. However, surfers enjoy it, too, for its fast beach break.

Local people have decorated the beach with colourfully-painted garden tables and benches, and a clean-up crew arrives every morning to spruce up the beach. Children play in the waves or bathe in the river, young men play football on the beach, and elderly people sit around chatting in the shade. Not much else goes on around here. This is Costa Rica at its most relaxed.
