About this photo

Few things are as emblematic of Japan as the geisha. Although often misconstrued to be high-class prostitutes, geishas are in fact highly trained companions and entertainers. Traditionally well-heeled men used geishas, but now they frequently appear at tourist events. Gion is Kyoto's famous pleasure quarter, or geisha district. Here you will find many well-preserved wooden buildings, teahouses and shops.
