Wat Rong Khun, Thailand's White Temple 31 Oct 2017
About this photo
The extraordinary Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) is located in Chiang Rai province, northern Thailand. At first, it may appear like a fairytale palace with its fantasy-like design. Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat began building the temple in 1997, and construction is ongoing. The entrance is across a bridge, below which 500 sculpted hands reach skywards from hell, imploring salvation. Among the offerings inside, festering hands hold burning cigarettes. Modern and sometimes controversial murals include planes hitting New York’s Twin Towers, satellites in outer space, and superheroes fromThe Matrix’s Neo to Batman.
