It’s a long way to Australia from just about everywhere. Here are a few great stopover ideas to break the journey and that make for an amazing holiday in their own right.

The best stopovers en route to Australia can primarily be found in Asia. The countries we've hotlisted all have hot tropical climates and pristine public spaces, plus great attractions, shopping and nightlife. Read on for some inspiration on where you can go and what's on offer when you get there...


1. Malaysia

Discover Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia‘s glam capital. whilst in the city you can visit gilded Buddhist temples, take photos at the sleek Petronas Towers, dine at lively restaurants and discover colonial gems. Go shopping along Petaling Street – it’s great for souvenirs – or hit the malls of Bukit Bintang. 2. Singapore

Singapore is a bit of a stopover surprise - the city is clean, it’s sophisticated and it’s safe. From the renowned shopping along Orchard Road to Sentosa’s fabulous white sand beaches, sizzling street food, rainforest safaris and wildlife, it’s easy to see why it’s a great place to recharge on long journeys with all the family.

3. Hong Kong

Hong Kong has plenty going for it, from its stunning waterside location to its exotic culture. The city is both modern and traditional and offers visitors the best of both worlds. Zip around on the MTR, only to explore century-old monasteries and temples, shop till you drop in glitzy malls in Central and the Mid-levels, then climb the dizzy heights of Victoria Peak. Afterwards, refuel on some authentic dim sum.

4. Thailand

Thailand has to be one of the favourite places to stop en route Down Under.  It’s lively capital Bangkok is a must-see destination with its colourful markets, shiny malls, Buddhist temples and exuberant nightlife. It’s cosmopolitan, charming and just a little crazy; what’s not to like?!
