About this photo

Arenal Volcano, in the northern lowlands of Costa Rica, stands out as the country’s most iconic volcano. From 1968 to 2010 the volcano was extremely active, erupting clouds of dust and lava on a regular basis. Since 2010 the eruptions have ceased.

The heat from inside the volcano still provides geothermal power to heat the ever-popular hot springs. Numerous other tours and activities are also on offer at Arenal from river rafting to horseback riding. Get active on Insight Guides' Costa Rica: Coast to Coast trip.
