About this photo

The Roman Rock lighthouse, erected in 1861 with its prefabricated iron tower sent from England, is distinctive for being the only lighthouse in South Africa to have been built on a single rock. Every summer, it is submerged by surging seas, but the automatic lighting system keeps on shining, guiding ships home to harbour.
