About this photo

Sloths inhabit the rainforests of Costa Rica, staying high up in the trees, which make them notoriously hard to spot as they blend seamlessly into the foliage with their brown-green hue.

Often regarded as the slowest mammals on earth, they have adapted to conserve their energy for times of danger. When they come face to face with predators, they move extremely fast, often successfully fighting them off. They are also very strong creatures, which helps with defence and also enables them to climb and cling on to branches. Insight Guides' Beaches and Volcano trip includes a guided tour of Manuel Antonio for the chance to see slots in their natural habitat.
