About this photo

Bordering the waterfront is Singapores exciting new downtown, Marina Bay, with fabulous water views and landscaped parklands.

The area is anchored by an extension of the CBD called Marina Bay Financial Centre, which boasts three soaring office towers, two residential towers, Marina Bay Link Mall and new food and drink outlets, a multi-concept restaurant, lounge and microbrewery perched on the 33rd floor.

Marina Bay Sands

Complementing the Financial Centre is the massive S$5 billion “integrated resort” Marina Bay Sands – the most expensive ever built by the American casino-resort giant Las Vegas Sands. Since its opening in 2010, Marina Bay Sands has been the talk of the town. The casino has four levels of gaming and 500 tables. There are six varieties of games on offer: baccarat, roulette, sic-bo, Singapore stud poker, non-commission baccarat and money wheel.

Safer gambling

In an attempt to control gambling problems, the government has introduced a casino entry levy. Singapore citizens or permanent residents must have a valid entry levy to enter the casino, and it expires after 24 hours. If they fail to pay up or overstay, they will be fined. Foreigners must show their passports and enter and exit via the “Foreigners” lane.

Meanwhile, to assist with any potential gambling problems, the National Council for Problem Gambling (NCPG) introduced a website and 24-hour hotline for those people who “experience difficulty in controlling their gambling or have a gambling addiction, which could lead to serious personal, financial and family issues.
